There is a certain thirteen-year-old girl named Jecolia, born under the golden sun of Al Ain and now dwelling among the restless monsoons of Nagercoil. She began drawing at the scandalously early age of five, not out of duty or discipline, but out of that delightful rebellion children call curiosity. When others broke crayons, she made worlds with them.
Now she wants to paints or colour or draw with a purpose for you, to gather ₹10 lakhs toward her and her two siblings schooling and a long-dreamed-of journey to Kenya for the family. One might think fundraising a dull affair, but in her hands it becomes something alive. When the world irritates her, especially her parents who are useful sources of inspiration, she takes up brush or pencil, and silence blooms. It is her small act of peace in a noisy universe.
As she likes to remind us, ”I love drawing because it calms me.” And perhaps, in that calm, the rest of us may find a little of our own.
